Default Any new plans for 2011?

Wondering if anyone has any changes planned for 2011? Any new purchases on the horizon?

2011 is going to be full of changes for me. I don't have all the details worked out yet, but it should be an interesting year to say the least!

mine is just getting everything rolling. lots of pics, video for marketing, several free or discounted gigs just to get the thing in front of people and generate interest. thinking of picking up a gemmy deluxe so i dont have to bring out a big one for my backyard when feeling the "itch". wanting to get the biz paying for itself instead of having the dj biz paying for it for now. i'd love to have a 6k lumen proj by end of summer but will be happy once i get gigs just to have the screens paid for.

Do you have a projector now? I thought I remember you saying you've used one while DJing in the past. I'm going to be selling my 4500 lumen projector soon if you're interested. Not quite 6k, but it works well on my 20' screen.

I am probably moving in the opposite direction than most people this year. I'm going to focus on backyard events (almost exclusively). Still working out the details, but that's the main reason I'm selling my bigger projector (it's overkill for the smaller parties).

Darn, I can't stop posting! You mentioned getting a Gemmy. I'm not a big fan of the Gemmy screen. I've only seen one in person, but I was unimpressed. I know a lot of people like them, so I'm probably in the minority.

I've been looking for an inflatable screen alternative, hopefully something that I could "rent" to customers more like a "drop and go" package. I found an interesting screen made by Camp Chef. Looks neat, goes together in about 15 minutes if I understand correctly.

Target has it for $199, but I've seen it for less. Here's Target's ad:

And here's a youtube video explaining the set up:

Hi Doug,

Just curious as to why you would focus on backyard movies vs bigger gigs with the 20ft? smaller $$ vs bigger $$??

I would have thought backyard stuff would be ok for mid week stuff and keep weekends open for big stuff ??

Hey Matthew,

The thing is, I could probably write a book trying to answer that question. The straight-forward answer is that it just makes the most sense given my current situation. Some of my reasons for concentrating on backyard parties do not make sense from a strict "business perspective". But, on the other hand, I have a plan in mind that might very well be quite lucrative. It's a gamble, but I plan to keep my options open if it doesn't work.

I realize I didn't really answer your question. But let's just say that I truly believe that I can eventually make as much money (if not more) doing only homeowner parties vs. bigger, licensed events.
